Beekeeping  -  A Practical Start

Course date 11 February 2017

A one-day course at Ashfield Community Enterprise, Howey, Llandrindod Wells LD1 5PL

For the person who has an interest in beekeeping, and who wishes to take practical steps towards setting up a hive in 2017.

On this one day course you will:

  • Assemble and keep an economy cedar BS National brood box.

  • Assemble a sample brood frame fitted with new worker beeswax foundation. (A National brood box holds 11 frames when full.  Additional frame parts are readily available from beekeeping suppliers).

  • Practise handling completed hives and equipment (without bees).

  • See examples and obtain advice on making other essential hive parts – e.g. cover boards / roofs / floors / feeders – including use of found materials.

  • Get practical advice and guidance for setting up a catch hive.

  • Get practical advice on hiving a swarm or nucleus.

Please note, in order to make good use of resources in a sustainable manner, timber may have solid live knots. All frames are also economy grade timber.  The timber supplied is accurately machined, the parts fit together well, and the equipment you make can be expected to give good service for many years.

Cost and Booking:  Total cost of the course is £90.  This includes all materials for the National brood box and sample brood frame with wax foundation; tea or coffee at break times and hot soup with a roll at lunch time (please bring additional lunch items as you wish).

We are very close to the maximum number of people that can attend so please get in touch with us directly via phone (01597) 829689 or email to find out if we have any spaces or if we are holding another date for the Bee Keeping Course.
